How Long Do THC Edibles Last? Shelf Life, Storage and Potency

Last updated September 24, 2026 · Wesley Holloway, founder of Benevolent Bakery

THE SHORT ANSWER

It depends on the format. Fresh baked edibles last a few days, gummies and chocolates several months, and dry baking mixes are among the most shelf-stable — sealed, low-moisture pantry goods. THC breaks down with heat, light and air, so store edibles airtight, cool and dark, and go by the best-by date on the package.

How long each type of edible lasts

Format Typical shelf life What shortens it
Fresh-baked brownies, cookies, cake 3–4 days airtight at room temperature; about a week in the fridge; up to 3 months frozen Air and moisture — drying out or mold
Gummies Several months to a year unopened Heat and humidity — sweating, sticking, melting
Chocolates Several months Heat — bloom and melting
THC drinks Follow the date on the can Light and heat
Dry baking mixes Check the best-by date on the box — among the longest of any format Humidity once opened

Do edibles lose potency over time?

Slowly. THC degrades when it's exposed to heat, light and oxygen — some of it turns into CBN, a milder cannabinoid — so an edible left on a sunny counter loses strength faster than one in a dark cupboard. Stored well, most edibles hold their labeled potency through the best-by date. Edibles don't get stronger with age. Dry mixes have an edge here: the THC sits in a sealed, low-moisture mix until the day you bake.

How to store THC edibles

Unopened mixes and packaged edibles

  • Keep them sealed in a cupboard or pantry, away from the stove, dishwasher and sunny windows.
  • Room temperature or cooler. Don't refrigerate unopened mixes — condensation does more damage than a warm shelf.
  • Gummies and chocolates do best somewhere cool and dry. In hot weather, a cool closet beats the kitchen.

After baking

  • Let it cool completely, then cut it into the servings on the label before you store it.
  • Airtight on the counter for 3–4 days, or about a week in the fridge.
  • For longer, wrap servings individually and freeze them in a labeled container for up to 3 months. Thaw one serving at a time.

Label everything and put it away

Anything infused gets a label the moment it leaves the pan: what it is, milligrams per piece and the date. Keep infused food in its own closed container — up high or locked — never mixed in with regular snacks. Accidental ingestion by kids or pets is the one storage mistake that really matters.

How long does an edible high last?

If you're asking about the effects rather than the shelf life: edibles usually take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in and last 4 to 8 hours, sometimes longer at higher doses. That's true of weed brownies, THC gummies and hemp-derived edibles alike, because they're all digested the same way. Wait at least 2 hours before deciding to have more. Our dosing guide covers where to start.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Packaged edibles have best-by dates; after that, texture and flavor decline and potency can slowly drop.

Can you freeze THC edibles?

Yes. Baked edibles freeze well for up to 3 months — portion and wrap them first.

Do edibles get stronger or weaker over time?

Weaker, slowly. THC breaks down with heat, light and air. It doesn't get stronger.

How long do THC gummies last?

Typically several months to a year unopened. Keep them cool and dry.

Do weed brownies go bad?

Yes. Fresh-baked weed brownies last 3–4 days airtight at room temperature, about a week in the fridge, or up to 3 months frozen.

How long does an edible high last?

Usually 4 to 8 hours, starting 30 minutes to 2 hours after eating. Higher doses can last longer.

How should I store edibles around kids and pets?

Labeled, in a closed container, out of reach or locked — never with regular snacks.

Must be 21+ to purchase. Benevolent Bakery sells hemp-derived Delta-9 THC products that meet the current federal definition of hemp (no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight). That definition changes on December 11, 2026, and our online orders close December 11 at 11:59 PM Central. We can't ship to Colorado, Idaho or Wyoming. Keep infused products away from children and pets, and don't drive after consuming. Nothing here is medical or legal advice.
